ERIC (EBSCOhost)

A guide to effectively using ERIC to search for education related articles, including strategies, finding full text, emailing or printing articles, exporting to RefWorks, and more.

What are Subject Terms and why are they important?

Subject Terms (AKA Subject Headings or Controlled Vocabulary) are assigned to database records by subject experts to describe the main concepts addressed. They're organizational tools--like a hashtag--that serve the valuable function of linking records that share that same terminology--even if they use different language to describe them. When you find good subject headings, you're well on your way to better search results.

How can I find subject terms for my search?

Subject terms may be found:

  • In  the Subjects list of an individual item record:
  • On the results list page, locate the Subject box in the left column. Click on boxes in front of subject terms and it will automatically update to limit them to your search.
    •

Using the Thesaurus

Disciplinary databases rely heavily on "controlled vocabulary," which is the official list of words and phrases that are used to describe the main concepts addressed in a record (article, book, report, etc.). To find recommended terminology, check the Thesaurus or Subject Index:

Enter the search term you would like to use to see if it is on their list or if there is another term used:
