Create a folder to store references

Folders are a great way to organize your references

  • Click on My Folders in the left column
  • Click on Add a folder
  • Enter a name for the collection
  • Click on Save

NOTE:   You can sort your folders alphabetically, or drag and drop them into a custom order. References may "live" in more than one folder.


Move references into a folder

  • Display all of the references or just those in a  particular folder 
  • Click on the box in front of the reference you wish to move
  • Click on the Assign to Folder icon (File folder) toward the top left of the page

  • Click on the box in front of the folder into which you wish to move the reference
  • Click on Apply

View all references

Click on All References in the upper left corner

  • Click on My Folders in the left column
  • Click on the name of the folder you wish to view

  • Click on Not in Folder

Create a subfolder, rename, or delete a folder

 

Create a Subfolder

  • Click on My Folders in the left column
  • Mouse over the name of the folder for which you'd like to add a subfolder
  • Click on the More Options icon (Three dots) to the right of the folder name
  • Click on Add Subfolder
  • Enter the name of the subfolder
  • Click on Save

Rename a Folder

  • Click on My Folders in the left column
  • Mouse over the name of the folder you want to rename
  • Click on the More Options icon to the right of the folder name
  • Click on Rename
  • When the Name your folder window opens, enter the new name for the folder
  • Click on Save

 

Delete a Folder

  • Click on My Folders in the left column
  • Mouse over the name of the folder you want to delete
  • Click on the More Options icon to the right of the folder name
  • Click on Delete
  • When the Delete? window opens, click on Yes

Delete references from RefWorks

  • Display all of the references or just those in the folder from which you will be deleting the reference
  • Click on the box to the left of the reference you wish to delete
  • Click on the Delete icon (Trash can) at the top of the page
  • When the pop-up window appears, select either:
    • Remove from folder
                    OR
    • Delete

What is the difference between Remove from folder and Delete?

  • Remove from folder:  The reference will be moved from the folder it was in to the Not in folder folder
  • Delete:  The reference will be completely removed from your RefWorks account

What if I accidentally delete a reference?

  • Click on Deleted in the left column
  • Click on the box in front of the reference you would like to recover/restore
  • Click on the Undo icon (Circular arrow)

View references multiple ways

RefWorks defaults to viewing references in Normal View, which is the beginning of the title, the author(s), and the publication date.

If you would like to view references in Citation View, click on the drop-down menu toward the top center of the page.
Click on the gear icon to change the citation style in which you would like to view the references.
