Copyright: Already Permitted Uses

Guide introduces the fundamental concepts of copyright and provides resources to comply with and exercise it.

Exemptions in Copyright Law

Classroom Use Exemption (17 U.S.C. 110 (1))

Very limited and does not apply to the online environment or to making copies.

Does allow:

  • Performance or display of a creative work, even in its entirety, in a classroom, face-to-face, of a non-profit educational institution
  • This is all allowed as long as the item performed or displayed was a lawfully made copy

Creative Commons Licenses

Creative Commons Logo

  • "Reasonable, flexible copyright" to allow sharing, reuse and remix legally
  • Licenses to communicate permitted uses for creative and scholarly works
  • Creative Commons' four variables
  1. Attribution - Give credit to the creator.
  2. Noncommercial - Cannot charge others based on your use of the work.
  3. No Derivative Works - Can only use the material in its entirety.
  4. Share Alike - must include the same license with your version of the work.

SPARK uses CC licenses to simplify the workflow of publishing content and to reduce the documentation needed, while allowing authors to keep their copyrights.

Library Subscriptions on Your Behalf

Database subscriptions that the library purchases on behalf of an academic department, or the whole institution, allow the Bethel community to access resources that can easily be incorporated into personal research and online courses. Use the search on the Library Homepage or find some specific kinds of resources:

Finding the Persistent or Permanent Link in library-subscribed databases can save you a lot of time and effort because we already have a license that allows us to link to the resources we paid for our community to use.

See the Library Guide to Persistent Links for more details
